The foundation of our hope for healing rests upon the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross. The Word of God assures us that when Jesus died, He took upon Himself the “punishment of us all.”
Sickness as Part of the Punishment of Sin
A powerful truth is revealed when we consider the scope of this punishment. One writer argues that sin is punished by soul-condemnation, remorse, mental anxiety, and frequently by sickness. Since Jesus bore the full punishment for all our sin, we must ask: By what rule of Scripture or reason is sickness “severed from the rest”? The prophet Isaiah affirms: “Jehovah hath caused to meet on him the punishment of us all.”
If sickness is a part of the punishment of sin, then the immutable Word of God demonstrates that sickness is included in the Atonement. To suggest otherwise would imply that God gives deliverance from every penalty and consequence of sin except sickness, which must inevitably remain. The idea that Jesus’ sacrifice was incomplete is rejected by the prophet’s words and by Jesus’ own declaration on the cross: “It is finished.” There was “nothing incomplete about the work of our mighty Jesus.” Were it otherwise, the prophet would have said that God “hath caused to meet on him only a part of the punishment of us all.”
This means that as a believer, you have been ransomed and redeemed from the consequences of the Fall, which include things like paleness, jaundice, and things that would have to do with your liver and your immune system, from things that would have your body dying. You’ve been redeemed from it!
God’s Ability and Willingness
When we approach God for healing from Gastroenteritis or any other affliction, we should never doubt His disposition to help us. God’s love is “exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think.” He is not only able but also willing to heal. It seems God would rather have us doubt His ability than His willingness, but the truth is He possesses both. He is all-powerful, and His love is extended even to His enemies, let alone His children. Trust in His great love that desires your complete restoration.
The Way of Restoration: Repentance and Trust
To receive the full blessing of God’s promises, we are encouraged to ensure we are “right with God before asking for healing.” The blessing of being right with God—which means living in repentance and faith—is “a thousand times more desirable and enjoyable than the healing itself.”
The Way of Restoration is simply to repent of any unbelief or backsliding and put yourself, as you are in weakness, into the bosom of your Father. Conversion is generally sudden, and coming into full salvation can be done in a moment by trusting God. Don’t let doubt say, “What’s the use?” Instead, give yourself up to Him. It is “only one step out of the darkness into the light” when you trust in His grace.
The Power of Faith and the Word
Faith is the key that unlocks the blessings of the Atonement in our lives, including healing. Jesus declared, “All things are possible to him that believes” (Mark 9:23).
The Seed of the Word
The Bible is not a collection of mere words; it is imperishable seed. “In the seed there are infinite possibilities.” Every promise, every verse of Scripture, is like a seed that, when allowed to germinate in a human heart, can grow into a harvest of blessing—including healing. Just as one kernel of wheat can, in time, cover a continent, so the plainest Bible text holds “a world of blessing.” Our victory over sickness begins with “Our giving attention to God’s Words” and gladly receiving them.
The ultimate source of our healing is not our own faith, but Jesus. As one person asked, “Are you saying our faith will heal us?” The answer is No. Jesus said it. He said that. It is Christ’s power working through our faith.
Overcoming Unbelief
Unbelief is a major obstacle to receiving what God has already provided. Even a righteous man like Zacharias, the temple priest, was struck dumb for a season because he had lived with unanswered prayer and had become “full of unbelief” regarding the angel’s promise. He had been praying prayers that he didn’t believe would be answered!
Jesus’ own disciples failed to heal a boy with a lunatic spirit, and Jesus revealed the cause was “Because of your unbelief.” This suggests that even believers can have an area of unbelief that hinders the miraculous. A key to combat unbelief in our own life today is “The baptism in the Holy Spirit and our obedience to Him.” Furthermore, while fasting doesn’t give you more authority, it just helps you get out of the flesh and get in the Spirit—helping us align ourselves with God’s will and power.
Taking Authority Over Sickness
God’s Word shows its supremacy and power over all things, including sickness. When a physical affliction like Gastroenteritis (with symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea, and cramps) strikes, we are instructed: “What should you do? Take authority over it, and run it out. Don’t get spooky. Don’t get afraid at all. Jesus has already conquered them.”
Jesus commissioned His followers, saying, “They shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” That “We are going to preach the Gospel… We cast out devils. We lay hands on the sick.” We are not to do this “mealy-mouthed with a ‘let’s try,’ and ‘let’s see if,’” but with the confidence that “Jesus said, ‘I said they would,’ so they will.” The anointing with oil, mentioned in Mark 6:13, was a religious ceremony that ran “parallel with the casting out of devils” and the healing of the sick, both being the result of “miraculous power.”
Finally, remember that God’s power is always available, even for those who might feel unworthy. Jesus held meetings “where anyone could walk up,” and the Word records that sometimes “He healed them all.” Jesus’ work is for everyone who believes. Stand firm on the complete work of the Atonement and the power of the Word, and expect your full redemption, even from sickness.
