Recovering from a cardiac arrest is a journey that involves more than just the physical restoration of the heart; it is a deep, spiritual process of reclaiming the life that has been given back to you. In the aftermath, you may be dealing with symptoms like profound fatigue, shortness of breath, or a lingering sense of chest discomfort. There is often an emotional weight as well—a “soul-weariness” or a fear of the future. Yet, in this season of recovery, you are standing in a place of significant transition, much like the sounding of a trumpet that signals a brand-new beginning.
The Jubilee of Restoration
In ancient times, the “Year of Jubilee” was a season of liberty and restoration. If a person had lost their property, their health, or their freedom, the Jubilee was the time when everything was legally returned to its rightful owner. It was a year-long party because it marked the end of lack and the beginning of wholeness.
When you survive a cardiac event, you have entered your own personal season of Jubilee. You are not a “helpless victim” waiting for a number to come up. Instead, you are invited to “return to your possession”—which includes the possession of a strong, rhythmic heart and a clear, steady life. Restoration is not just about surviving; it is about the “Ultimate Triumph” of getting back every bit of strength and joy that was challenged.
Scripture 1: Galatians 3:13
“Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree.”
The Earnest of Our Inheritance
Think of your current recovery as a “whopper engagement ring.” In many cultures, an engagement gift or a “token” is given as an earnest—a relatively small part of the total gift given now to prove that the rest is coming later. The fact that you are breathing today, even if you feel weak, is the “earnest” or the “firstfruits” of your total inheritance of health.
If you are feeling the “superfluous defects” of fatigue or physical limitation, do not look at them as permanent. God is the “Self-Existent One” who provides the sap and nourishment to the branch. As a branch, you don’t have the responsibility to produce the life; your only job is to receive it from the root. Allow the Holy Spirit, who is in you, to be the “Preserver” of your whole spirit, soul, and body. This life in you is a guarantee that more strength is on the way.
The Authority to Take Hold
There is a common tradition that says, “I guess it’s not the will of God for me to be well yet.” But if we truly believed it was God’s will for us to be sick, we wouldn’t spend a single dime at a doctor trying to get out of His will. We must be consistent. Jesus never told a seeker, “I won’t heal you.” Instead, He went about “doing good and healing all.”
Recovery requires a determination to “press through.” Like the man who lay on his bed and decided, “I believe I receive,” you must lay hold of your health by faith. This isn’t a passive waiting; it is putting on your “traveling boots.” Even if you haven’t “left the house” or felt like yourself in a long time, gird up your loins and get ready to move. Your heart is not meant to be a place of distress, but a “house of prayer” and a temple of strength.
Scripture 2: Mark 11:24
“Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.”
Strength for Service
The only proper basis for seeking health is so that we may have “strength for service.” When we desire our health for God’s glory, it changes our perspective. Instead of focusing on the clinical “prognosis,” we fix our eyes on the “Redemptive Names” of God. He is Jehovah-Rapha—the Lord who heals. This name is not “I Was,” but “I Am.” He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
During cardiac recovery, you might feel like your work or your daily chores separate you from peace. But when you realize that your work is simply “the branch bearing fruit,” the weariness disappears. You are linked to Jesus in a way that provides “sap” for every demand of the spirit and body. He is able to do “superabundantly” above all you could dare to ask or think. Even if the doctors have given you a list of things you “can’t” do, remember that God specializes in things people can’t explain.
Scripture 3: Psalm 103:2-3
“Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases.”
Choosing the High Road
There are always two “ditches” to avoid: one where we pretend there is no challenge, and another where we are paralyzed by fear. The “high road” is recognizing that while symptoms are real, they must obey the authority of the Word. If you are experiencing “limbs swollen” or “blood pressure” issues, do not be discouraged. These are merely “thorns in the flesh”—distractions that attempt to “vex” you.
Proclaim your liberty today. Proclaim that your “trouble is gone.” God’s heart goes out to you just as it did to the multitudes who converged on Him in the solitary place. He didn’t chase them away, and He won’t chase you away. He is looking at you with compassion, ready to pour in the “healing balm” of His Word.
A New Experience of Life
As you read these words, let a “gift of healing” drop into your heart. It is a free gift, a special thing for your specific situation. You are an heir of the promise, a member of a “better covenant” established on “better promises.” The same power that raised Jesus from the dead is at work within your chest right now.
Do not be vague or thoughtless about your recovery. Firmly grasp what the will of the Lord is. His will is wholeness. His will is for you to “return to your family” and “return to your possession” of full, vibrant health. You are coming up and coming out of this season. Every day is a new experience, linking you closer to the source of life. Shine your light, tell the story of what God has done, and walk forward in the strength of the “Great I Am.”
