Healing in the Scriptures and Today: God’s Will for Restoration

The Bible reveals a God who is deeply concerned with the healing of His people—body, soul, and spirit. From Genesis to Revelation, divine healing is a consistent theme. The Scriptures show that God is not only the Savior of our souls but also the Restorer of our physical health.

Isaiah 53:4-5 (KJV) proclaims,

“Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows… and with his stripes we are healed.”

This prophecy points to Jesus, the Suffering Servant, who bore not only our sins but also our sicknesses and pains. His atoning work at the Cross provided for our full redemption, including healing. In His earthly ministry, Jesus’ healing lines often lasted from sunrise to sunset. Multitudes brought their sick, and He healed them all (Matthew 12:15). In these words, we find not only His willingness to heal in those moments but also His eternal desire to restore health to His people.

Yet today, many struggle with serious illnesses, such as chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL). According to the NHS, CLL is a type of cancer that affects white blood cells and usually progresses slowly over many years. It primarily affects people over the age of 60 and is rare in those under 40. Children are almost never affected by this condition. In CLL, the bone marrow produces too many abnormal white blood cells (lymphocytes) that do not function properly. These cells crowd out healthy cells and weaken the immune system.

Understanding the physical realities of diseases like CLL is important, but we must never forget the spiritual truths revealed in Scripture. In Matthew 17, we see a father bringing his epileptic son to the disciples for healing. When they failed, Jesus stepped in and healed the boy, demonstrating that even when human efforts fall short, God’s will to heal remains unchanged.

This healing encounter teaches us a vital principle: our faith must be rooted in the Word of God and the finished work of Christ, not merely in human ability or success. Jesus did not attribute healing to His own power alone but often said, “Your faith has made you whole” (Mark 5:34). Faith is the channel through which God’s healing flows.

In James 5:14-15 (KJV), the apostle gives clear instructions for believers:

“Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up.”

This passage shows that healing prayer is not a man-made doctrine but a divine command. The anointing with oil symbolizes the Holy Spirit’s power, and the prayer of faith is the key to unlocking God’s healing promises.

Why, then, do some not receive healing? The Bible offers several answers. In Mark 9, after the disciples failed to heal, Jesus pointed to the necessity of prayer and fasting—spiritual preparation that aligns us more fully with God’s power. In other cases, unbelief and doubt can hinder healing (Matthew 13:58). The Lord calls us to guard our hearts against these barriers and to trust His Word steadfastly.

We must also remember that healing is not always instantaneous. Jesus said in Mark 16:18, “They shall recover.” Recovery often involves a process. Faith is not moved by symptoms but stands firm on God’s promises. Some may say, “I tried and it didn’t work,” but faith does not waver based on immediate results. As long as we are able to believe, we stand on the promise: “They shall recover.”

Jesus’ stripes at the whipping post were not just acts of cruelty. 1 Peter 2:24 declares,

“By whose stripes ye were healed.”
He endured scourging before the Cross, not because it was required for atonement, but to purchase our healing. Even if our minds cannot fully comprehend it, our hearts can embrace this divine exchange—His suffering for our healing.

The healing covenant is part of our inheritance as children of Abraham (Galatians 3:29). Jehovah-Rapha, “the Lord who heals,” is our covenant God. Just as the seed of Abraham was promised healing and health, so too are we as heirs in Christ. This promise is not a historical relic but a living reality for every believer.

Scriptural Promises for Pure Blood and New Life

Chronic illnesses like CLL remind us of our frailty, but they also call us to anchor ourselves in God’s Word. Medical treatment and wise care are vital, and God often uses them in His healing process. Yet our ultimate hope must rest in Christ’s finished work. As we walk through medical treatment, we do so with faith, declaring, “By His stripes I am healed,” trusting that God works through both spiritual and natural means.

In the study of the Lord’s compassion, we find not only His willingness but His delight to heal. Hebrews 4:15 (KJV) says,

“For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities…”
Jesus is moved by our suffering, and He intercedes for us even now as our compassionate and faithful High Priest.

In conclusion, whether we face a sudden illness or a chronic condition like CLL, God’s will for healing remains the same. We must combine practical medical care with unwavering faith in God’s Word. We must declare His promises and trust His power to restore. Let the Scriptures shape our faith: healing is part of the Gospel, secured by Jesus’ sacrifice, alive through the Holy Spirit, and available to all who believe.

Throughout Scripture, the power of God to heal and restore His people is evident.

The Bible teaches that sickness and affliction are not beyond the reach of His mercy, and He calls His followers to trust in His divine plan. In light of this truth, we explore the theme of healing through the lens of Addison’s disease, also known as primary adrenal insufficiency or hypoadrenalism. This rare disorder of the adrenal glands serves as a reminder of human frailty, yet it also points to God’s sovereign ability to heal and sustain.

The adrenal glands, two small but vital structures sitting atop the kidneys, play a crucial role in the body’s function. These glands produce essential hormones: cortisol, aldosterone, and adrenaline. Cortisol helps the body respond to stress, aldosterone regulates sodium and potassium levels, and adrenaline prepares the body for action.
