What the Bible Says About Digestive Health and Freedom
“In the first place it is a life of absolute dependence. The branch has nothing: it just depends upon the vine for everything.” Lactose intolerance can make you feel painfully aware of your limits. You read labels, plan meals, worry about reactions, and sometimes feel tired of thinking about food at all. But this is exactly where the Lord invites you into a deeper, beautiful dependence.
If the branch tries to live alone, it withers. If you try to carry this alone, it’s exhausting. But if you cling to the Vine, moment by moment, you discover that “If you can learn every moment of the day to depend upon God, everything will come right.” Dependence isn’t weakness; it is the doorway to the higher life.
Divine healing takes place wherever the Spirit of God works in power. History shows believers who experienced real healings as the Holy Spirit moved among them. There are still promises about the outpouring of the Spirit that have not yet been fully seen. So we live in holy expectation, praying, “Lord, accomplish them in me – even in my digestive system.”
Remember: sickness is not an “angel” from God. In Scripture, the word translated “angel” or “messenger” always refers to a person – never a disease. Paul’s “thorn in the flesh” is described as “Satan’s messenger,” bringing buffetings, not a gift of sickness from a loving Father. God is not double-minded. Ephesians tells us to understand what the will of the Lord is: if it’s good, receive it; if it’s evil, resist it. Confusion about God’s will has turned many churches into a Nazareth of unbelief, where very little is expected or received. But the Bible says, “In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.” Witness one: in Job’s case, it was the devil who made him sick (Job 2:7). Witness two: Jesus went about healing, not making people ill.
So how do you cooperate with God in this very practical area?
- Feed on the Gospel that builds faith. In Acts 28, a sick man heard the Gospel and was healed – not by a special manifestation, but by his own faith from hearing. If we have the same Gospel, we can expect the same results. Let teaching about Jesus as Healer fill you more than stories of defeat.
- Use your words as seeds. If you have said for years, “I can’t eat that; I’ll be sick,” those words have helped shape your expectations. Now, gently but firmly, begin to say, “My body is learning to respond in line with redemption. The Lord is healing and stabilising my digestion.” You are not lying; you are agreeing with God’s redemptive will.
- Pray with bold, simple faith. It’s not in volume or sweat. It is in faith – no “ifs,” no “buts,” just, “Jesus, You are my Healer, and I receive Your life in my body.”
And while you are believing for full healing, know this: Jesus walks with you in every food choice, social event, and symptom. The Holy Spirit, the water of life, wants to flow out of you, not just to heal you, but eventually to make you a channel of hope to others with “hidden” conditions. You can learn to say, “I’m redeemed,” not just as a song, but as a steady confession over your body: Redeemed from fear, redeemed from confusion, redeemed from the curse – including this lactose intolerance.
Overcoming Dietary Limits Through Faith
“In Psalm 23, he said, ‘The Lord is my shepherd’… ‘I shall not want.’ He maketh me to lie down in green pastures…” A sheep only lies down when its belly is full and at rest. Right now, with lactose intolerance, your body can feel the exact opposite of “full and at rest.” After dairy, you might get cramping, bloating, nausea, gas, diarrhoea, or that dragging weakness that makes you say, “I just feel off.” You might even find yourself saying, “I can’t stand that, and I can’t eat that,” over and over.
But your Shepherd hasn’t stepped away from you because your digestive system is sensitive. He is still Jehovah-Rapha – “I am the Lord who heals you” (Exodus 15:26). He did not say, “I was Jehovah-Rapha.” His name is not past tense. His redemptive name is “settled in heaven,” and no one has the right to change His “I am” to “I was.” Jesus did not change when your symptoms began.
Where did sickness come from? The Word is clear: “By one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin” (Romans 5:12). Sickness is part of the package of death – it is not part of God’s beautiful, original design. In His original creation, there was no sickness. So lactose intolerance is not your identity from God; it is a symptom in a fallen world, faced by a redeemed child.
Jesus came as both your Sacrifice and your Example. As Sacrifice, He carried your sin and the curse. As Example, He went about healing “great multitudes,” and “He healed them there.” He then said that those who believe on Him would do the same works (John 14:12–13). He gave His disciples power and authority “to cure diseases” and sent them “to heal the sick” (Luke 9:1–2). Healing is not a side issue to Jesus – it is part of His heart.
So what do you do with a body that reacts to milk, cheese, ice cream, and so many “normal” foods?
- Refuse condemnation. You are not a “lesser Christian” because your stomach protests. You are loved, redeemed, and precious in His sight right now.
- Acknowledge the battle but side with the Word. It’s okay to say, “Right now my body reacts to lactose,” while also saying, “But I am redeemed from the curse of the law, and Jesus is my Healer.”
- Begin to shift your words. Instead of, “My gut is hopeless,” begin to say, “My digestive system is blessed. The Lord is restoring what is out of order.”
Your Shepherd took the beating so you wouldn’t have to. A really good shepherd will stand between the sheep and the wolf. Jesus stepped between you and the curse. He wants you healed and is willing to pay whatever it takes – and He already did at the cross. Let this be your starting point: I am not abandoned in this. The Lord is my Shepherd, and He cares about my gut, my food choices, my pain, my embarrassment, and my hope.
