Kendra’s Climbing Journey: Overcoming Challenges with Faith

By Lydia, Church Writer
April 2025 Issue

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As we journey through this season of growth and reflection, I wanted to share with you an inspiring story that speaks to perseverance, faith, and the power of overcoming challenges. It’s a story of a young woman named Kendra, from our very own Columbia, Maryland, who faced obstacles head-on and emerged stronger than she ever imagined.

Kendra, a passionate and determined woman, had always been curious about rock climbing. The idea of climbing mountains, literally and figuratively, intrigued her. But like many of us when we’re faced with new opportunities, she wasn’t sure if rock climbing was the right path for her. She wrestled with the decision for months, unsure whether she was cut out for such an intense and physically demanding activity. However, as she shared her thoughts with her family, they were a constant source of encouragement. They reminded her that no matter the challenge, God had given her the strength to pursue her passions.

Kendra’s story is a beautiful example of what happens when we step out of our comfort zones and trust God’s plan for us, even when we are unsure. She eventually decided to give rock climbing a try. She spent months learning the ropes—both literally and figuratively—training in a local gym, slowly building her confidence and skill. She had to choose between bouldering, which is a form of rock climbing done on shorter walls, or sport climbing, which involves climbing longer routes with the aid of fixed anchors. After much consideration, Kendra chose sport climbing, believing it would be a better fit for her.

But as we all know, the path to success is rarely smooth. One fateful afternoon, while climbing at a local gym, Kendra made a mistake during a particularly intense session. She lost her footing and fell, landing hard. It was a devastating moment for her. I think we can all relate to times when we face setbacks that leave us feeling discouraged. But instead of giving in to fear or frustration, Kendra chose to persevere. She refused to let that fall define her journey.

The Bible reminds us in Hebrews 12:1, “Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” Kendra’s response to her fall was a testament to this scripture. She picked herself up, brushed off the disappointment, and continued training with even more determination. Her faith in God and her passion for climbing helped her push through the pain and fear. As time went on, Kendra not only became proficient at sport climbing but began coaching younger climbers at the local gym. She found joy in helping others overcome their own challenges and improve their climbing skills.

Kendra’s coaching journey wasn’t without its challenges, but she faced them with a heart full of faith. Through her guidance, her students excelled. Many of them qualified for national climbing competitions. Kendra’s story was beginning to make an impact beyond her local gym. It was proof that when we align our passions with God’s purpose for our lives, extraordinary things happen.

Just when Kendra thought her year couldn’t get any more fulfilling, she received an invitation to attend a prestigious climbing summit. This was a momentous occasion for her. But little did she know that this event would lead to an even greater surprise. At the summit, she was approached by a representative from an international climbing team. They had heard about Kendra’s success as a coach and invited her to join them for a special project that would take her climbing to new heights. This unexpected opportunity was the culmination of Kendra’s hard work, perseverance, and unwavering faith in God’s plan.

Reflecting on Kendra’s story, I am reminded of the powerful message found in Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Kendra didn’t rely on her own strength alone. She trusted that God would give her the strength she needed, even in moments of doubt. Through prayer, patience, and perseverance, she achieved things she never thought possible. It’s a testament to the fact that with God by our side, there is no challenge too great for us to overcome.

As we look forward to the year ahead, I encourage each of you to take a step of faith in your own life. Whether it’s pursuing a new dream, overcoming a personal setback, or helping others achieve their goals, trust that God will give you the strength and wisdom to succeed. Like Kendra, you may face challenges along the way, but remember the words of Isaiah 41:10: “Do not be afraid, for I am with you.” God’s presence is with us in every step we take.

Perhaps you are in a place right now where you are uncertain about which path to take. Maybe you are standing at the edge of something new and unfamiliar, just as Kendra was when she first stepped into the world of rock climbing. If that’s you, I encourage you to trust God’s leading, take a step of faith, and know that He will equip you for whatever lies ahead.

As we close, I’d like to leave you with a final thought. Sometimes the greatest rewards come not from avoiding failure, but from pushing through it with perseverance. Kendra’s journey reminds us that even when we fall, we can rise again with strength and purpose. And when we do, we will be ready for the opportunities that God has prepared for us.

May God bless you all as you pursue your own journeys, and may you feel His strength and presence with you every step of the way.

In Christ’s love,
Lydia

Christian Healing Power

Friend, this is some of the best news you will ever hear: mercy is unearned, undeserved, and unmerited. It is a gift from God, freely given, just like salvation, forgiveness, and healing. Many people believe that if they are good enough, God will reward them with healing, but that is not how His mercy works. It is not based on our righteousness but on His. Our righteousness, as the Bible states, is like filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6), but through Jesus, we have been given His righteousness, which is already accepted in heaven.

People sometimes think they must bargain with God for healing, as if it were a transaction. They promise to be better, to do better, in exchange for healing. However, healing, like salvation, cannot be bought. It is already paid for by the blood of the Lamb. When Simon the Sorcerer tried to buy the power of God, Peter rebuked him sharply, declaring that God’s gifts cannot be purchased (Acts 8:18-20).

Healing, like forgiveness, is a mercy

A divine gift freely given. When we believe that we must earn it, we diminish the power of Christ’s sacrifice. No one can ever be good enough to deserve healing on their own merits, just as no one can be good enough to earn salvation. Jesus came to pay the price so that we might receive His mercy, not by works but through faith.

The Bible declares that we have been bought with a price, and our bodies and spirits belong to God (1 Corinthians 6:20). When we accept this, we can confidently say: “I am bought and paid for. My healing is bought and paid for. I don’t have to earn it.” If healing depended on our goodness, none of us would ever be healed. It is a mercy, a gift from a loving God who delights in blessing His children.

Mercy means that we do not receive the judgment we deserve, and instead, we receive blessings we did not earn. Throughout the Bible, those who cried out for mercy received healing. The blind men called out, “Have mercy on us,” and Jesus healed them. The Lord remains merciful today, offering healing to all who call upon Him.

Psalm 86:15 declares, “But you, O Lord, are a God full of compassion, and gracious, long-suffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth.” His mercy is abundant, available to all who seek Him, regardless of past failures or mistakes. To question whether healing is God’s will is to question whether He desires to be merciful. The Bible affirms that He is rich in mercy toward all who call on Him (Ephesians 2:4-5). Healing is not about deserving—it is about believing in God’s mercy and receiving His grace.

The Power of Compassion

Many people struggle to believe in God’s mercy, thinking their mistakes disqualify them from His blessings. Peter, after denying Christ three times, must have felt unworthy of being used by God. Yet, Jesus sought him out after the resurrection, restoring him and commissioning him to feed His sheep (John 21:15-17). On the day of Pentecost, Peter stood boldly, preaching salvation, healing, and deliverance. This was the same man who had once denied even knowing Jesus! God’s mercy restored him and empowered him to fulfill his calling.

This same mercy is available to all who turn to God. It is the devil’s lie that tells people they must suffer for their past sins before they can receive God’s blessings. Such thinking undermines the sufficiency of Christ’s sacrifice. His blood is enough to cleanse, restore, and heal completely.

Matthew 14:14 describes how Jesus was moved with compassion for the multitude and healed their sick. Among thousands of people, surely there were some who did not “deserve” healing by human standards. Yet, Jesus healed them all. His mercy does not discriminate—it is freely given to all who come to Him in faith.

People often hesitate to seek healing because they feel unworthy. They believe they must first achieve a certain level of righteousness. But Jesus did not heal based on merit—He healed based on compassion. The sick, the broken, the sinful—all found healing in His presence. His mercy extended to the most unlikely people, proving that healing is not a reward for good behavior but an expression of God’s love.

Some believe that healing is only for the deserving, but the Bible refutes this idea. Jesus healed the unworthy, the sinners, the outcasts. His love and mercy are boundless. This is why the enemy tries to convince people that they are too far gone, too sinful, or too unworthy to receive healing. It is a lie. The mercy of God is greater than any sin, any failure, any shortcoming.

Philippians 2:25-27 tells of Epaphroditus, a faithful worker for God who became gravely ill. Paul did not heal him through his apostolic authority, nor did Epaphroditus’ own faith instantly deliver him. Yet, God had mercy on him and healed him. Healing is always an act of mercy, not a transaction based on worthiness or faithfulness.

This truth should encourage all believers: no matter how far you have fallen, God’s mercy is still available. No matter how unworthy you feel, His healing power is still at work. Say aloud: “I have faith in the mercy of God. I believe in the mercy of God.”

The Bible declares that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). Just as He was moved with compassion to heal in the past, He is still healing today. Do not let guilt, fear, or self-doubt keep you from receiving God’s mercy. Healing is not something you earn—it is a gift already paid for by Jesus Christ. Receive it with faith and thanksgiving, and walk in the fullness of His grace.

Finding Hope in Darkness: A Spiritual Journey

Life has a way of presenting challenges that leave us yearning for clarity and hope. In moments of despair, even a sliver of light can reveal the path forward. “He’s come,” the matron announced, her face glowing with hope. In that moment, all else faded, and the focus shifted to Jesus alone. Similarly, in times of personal darkness, God’s faithfulness provides a light that pierces through uncertainty and fear.

The story of escaping devastating fires, as seen in Bill and Karen’s journey, exemplifies this. They found themselves at a crossroads of despair but also witnessed God’s hand at work as Bill served as a Red Cross chaplain, bringing comfort to others. This reflects the truth of John 1:5, which says, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

Light also reveals the beauty of restoration. Consider the miracle of a man whose sight in one eye was saved, along with the forming of a new mouth. This remarkable recovery points to God’s ability to redeem even the most broken situations. In Isaiah 61:3, God promises to give us “a crown of beauty instead of ashes.” No matter how dire circumstances appear, God’s transformative power can turn ashes into beauty and darkness into light.

Revival in the Waiting

Waiting is never easy, yet it is often in the waiting that God works most profoundly. The fires of revival, like those that swept through Asbury and beyond, started with a spark—a hunger for God. This hunger, though born in quiet places, can ignite movements that spread far and wide. As the Lord said, “No longer will you live under the seasons,” a declaration that speaks of freedom from cycles of despair into seasons of purpose and renewal.

Finney’s ministry in the frontier communities of upper New York is a testament to perseverance in the face of mixed reception. Opposition came, but so did transformation. Revival often begins with a few faithful individuals who are willing to intercede, pour out their hearts, and stand firm in the promises of God.

The shaking of the world we experience today is a reminder of Haggai 2:7, which declares, “I will shake all nations, and what is desired by all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory.” God’s shaking is not to harm but to align His people with His purpose. It births courage, inspires new songs, and brings people out of hiding to fulfill their callings.

A New Thing is Coming

The promise of Isaiah 43:19 rings true: “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?” The testimonies of restored lives, protected homes, and miraculous healing reveal a God who is not done with us yet. On Black Saturday, when things looked bleak, God provided. Through acts of faith, such as praying over homes and watching them be spared, His faithfulness shone brightly.

Jesus’ tears over Jerusalem remind us of the importance of recognizing God’s movements in our lives. The grief of missed opportunities is heavy, but the joy of stepping into God’s will outweighs it. Many have poured out their lives in intercession, and God declares, “This is your harvest time.” The seeds planted in tears will be reaped in joy.

In the midst of trials, God calls His people to remember that “faith and actions work together” (James 2:22). Whether it’s preaching the gospel like Peter, caring for the marginalized, or standing firm in the face of adversity, God equips us to act. The story of Bill and Karen reminds us that even when all seems lost, God is still at work.

Finally, God’s anointing for wholistic healing is a reminder of His power to restore every aspect of our lives. The testimony of a community gathering at three in the morning to praise and pray until sunrise captures the essence of revival—a movement that starts with hearts ignited by His love.

In conclusion, whether we are navigating personal trials, responding to a call to intercede, or witnessing the new things God is doing, we are reminded of His unwavering faithfulness. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, and trust that He is working all things together for His glory. As the fire of revival spreads, may we join in declaring, “I was created for this!”
