The loss of a child through miscarriage is a pain that often retreats into the shadows of silence. It is a unique kind of grief—a valley where the heart feels the “shadow of death” even before it has had the chance to behold the light of a new life. If you are walking through this valley today, you may be experiencing more than just physical symptoms like cramping, bleeding, or the sudden loss of pregnancy signs; you may be experiencing a “lack” in your soul—a void that feels impossible to fill.
In these moments, the enemy of your soul loves to whisper the lie that you are alone, or worse, that you somehow “deserved” this. But we serve a Shepherd who specializes in restoration.
The Mercy that Meets You in the Valley
One of the most common traps for a grieving mother is to say, “I don’t deserve for God to heal my heart or my body. I’ve made mistakes.” To that, the Gospel responds with a resounding: Exactly. None of us “deserve” the goodness of God based on our own perfection. That is why we stand on mercy.
Mercy means you do not get the judgment or the heaviness you feel you might “deserve,” and instead, you receive the blessings and the healing that you could never earn. Mercy is the hand of God reaching into the ditch of our despair to pull us out. If you feel you have taken a “wrong turn” in life and found yourself in a ditch of sorrow, know that the Shepherd is not overwhelmed by your location. He is not busy at some heavenly switchboard, too occupied with the prayers of “more important” people to hear yours. He is the Almighty, sitting on the throne in complete peace, and His ear is pressed toward your heart.
He Restoreth My Soul
The Scripture promises us in Psalm 23:3: “He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”
Miscarriage is an attack on the “springs of life” that flow from your heart. When your soul is wounded, you are “lacking.” You lack peace, you lack strength, and you lack the joy that once felt so natural. But we serve a Shepherd who is able to meet every need. He does not want you to live in a state of lack. His will is to manifest restoration in your life until you can say, “I am complete and entire. I want nothing. I lack not for any good thing.”
Guarding the Heart, the Wellspring of Life
The Amplified Bible tells us to “Keep and guard your heart with all vigilance and above all that you guard, for out of it flow the springs of life” (Proverbs 4:23).
Your heart—your spirit—is where the life of your flesh originates. You are not just a brain or a biological machine; you are a spirit. The life that animates your body comes from the Spirit of God within you. When the physical body suffers a loss, it is vital to guard your heart against the “indignation” of legalism or the “bonds” of spirit-breaking grief. Just as Jesus looked at the woman who had been bound for eighteen years and declared she ought to be loosed, He looks at your bound heart today and declares your freedom.
The Table in the Presence of Your Enemies
You might ask, “How much disease or loss is in heaven?” The answer is none. Our heavenly Father intended this age—the dispensation of the Holy Spirit—to be the most miraculous of all. It is the age where the Miracle-Worker actually lives inside of us.
Psalm 23:5 says: “Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies.” This table of provision—healing for the body, peace for the mind, and joy for the spirit—is not set in heaven. Your enemies aren’t in heaven! This table is set right here on earth, in the middle of this “devil-filled, curse-filled, and disease-filled” world. Right in the middle of your grief, God has spread a feast of His promises. To neglect this table is to underestimate the Shepherd.
Choosing to Believe Beyond Feeling
Believing is what gives us total freedom in our spirit because it is not based on what we see or feel. You can choose to believe in your restoration even when you feel the physical “wear down” of strength. You can choose to believe that your youth and vitality will be renewed like the eagle’s (Psalm 103:5).
If any person has ever been healed or restored, it was based on what Jesus has already done. We are looking back at a finished work.
- 1 Peter 2:24 tells us: “By His stripes you were healed.” This is a past-tense reality. In the Spirit, your wholeness is already a “settled, sealed, and final decision.” When you get into the Word for yourself, you stop waiting for a “special” move of God and you begin to walk in the “refining fire” of His current presence.
The Miracle-Worker is Within
We live in the dispensation of the Spirit. This is the only age where God has chosen to incarnate Himself in us to do “greater works.” Your reaction to this loss can either restrict or release God more in your life. If you react with a “stubbornness of pride” that says you must carry this burden alone, you restrict the flow of life. But if you humble yourself and realize that “Christ must care for all,” you release the Miracle-Worker to do what He does best: heal the brokenhearted.
Do not allow traditional ideas to suggest that God is the author of your loss. Jesus healed all who came to Him, proving the unchanging will of God for wholeness. He is not “perspiring” over your case. He is not overwhelmed. He is the Almighty, and He is inviting you to sit at His table today.
Say this out loud: “The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not lack. He restores my soul. By His stripes, I was healed, and I receive His peace that passes all understanding.”
Put your foot on the neck of despair. Do not “try” to believe—simply do. Stand on the Word which is your medicine, and watch as you grow stronger as you go.
