In the Bible, healing is a profound sign of God’s power and mercy. Jesus healed many who were sick, and His apostles carried forward this healing ministry as a testament to the Kingdom of God. The Scriptures remind us that physical healing and spiritual restoration often go hand in hand. As we consider the condition of coeliac disease and the role of gluten in our diet, we can find both practical and spiritual lessons about God’s love for our bodies and His desire for our well-being.
What is Coeliac Disease?
Coeliac disease is a common autoimmune condition where the immune system in a person’s intestine (gut) reacts when they eat gluten. This causes chronic inflammation, leading to damage in the lining of the small intestine. In Bible times, they may not have known the term “coeliac disease,” but they certainly understood what it meant to suffer from chronic illnesses. Jesus met people in every stage of sickness, including those with hidden, ongoing afflictions like the woman who had been bleeding for twelve years (Luke 8:43-48). Just as He cared for them, He cares for us in our struggles, even those that are less visible.
What is Gluten?
Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. In the modern diet, gluten is in many foods: bread, pasta, cereals, and baked goods. For people with coeliac disease, gluten acts like a trigger. When they eat gluten, their immune system attacks the small intestine, causing pain, diarrhea, fatigue, and other health issues. God has given us wisdom and knowledge to understand how our bodies work and how to avoid what harms us. Just as Daniel chose to eat foods that honored God and kept him healthy (Daniel 1:8-16), we can make wise choices to protect our bodies.
Healing in Scripture
The Bible is full of examples of God’s healing power. One of the most famous is when Jesus healed the man who was born blind (John 9:1-7). This man didn’t know why he was blind, but Jesus saw beyond the cause to reveal God’s glory. In coeliac disease, people may not know why they have the condition—often it’s a mix of genetic and environmental factors—but we trust that God can bring good even from illness. Psalm 103:2-3 says, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits—who forgives all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases.”
Faith, Diet, and Wisdom
While we trust in God’s power to heal, we also recognize that He gives us knowledge and tools. Coeliac disease requires a lifelong gluten-free diet. Avoiding gluten is the only current treatment to prevent chronic inflammation and promote healing in the gut. In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, Paul reminds us, “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit? … Therefore honor God with your bodies.” Taking care of our diet is a way to honor God and be good stewards of the bodies He gave us.
In the Old Testament, God gave the Israelites dietary laws to protect their health (Leviticus 11). While we are not under those laws today, the principle of caring for our bodies and eating in ways that promote health still applies. God wants us to live in wholeness—physically and spiritually.
The Role of Prayer and Medicine
We should not see faith and medical advice as opposites. God has blessed us with doctors, nutritionists, and scientists who help us manage conditions like coeliac disease. Jesus said in Mark 2:17, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.” We honor God by seeking the help we need.
We also pray in faith. James 5:14-15 says, “Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them … And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well.” Prayer is a powerful part of healing. Even when healing is gradual or when managing a condition like coeliac disease, prayer brings us peace and reminds us that God is with us.
Living Gluten-Free: A Modern Example of Healing
Living with coeliac disease means avoiding gluten carefully. This might feel restrictive, but it’s an act of obedience to the knowledge God has given us. Just as Naaman had to wash seven times in the Jordan to be healed (2 Kings 5:10-14), following medical wisdom can be part of the healing process.
For those newly diagnosed with coeliac disease, it can be overwhelming. Jesus said in Matthew 11:28-30, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” We bring our struggles, including dietary challenges, to Him, trusting that He will strengthen us. With God’s help and wise choices, people with coeliac disease can live healthy, full lives.
Healing for the Whole Person
God cares not just for our physical bodies but for our whole being. Isaiah 53:5 prophesies about Jesus: “By His wounds we are healed.” This healing includes forgiveness of sin, emotional restoration, and sometimes physical healing. For those with coeliac disease, healing might not mean an instant cure but rather the strength to follow a gluten-free lifestyle, peace in the midst of challenges, and the knowledge of God’s love.
A Future Hope
Ultimately, we look forward to the day when all diseases, including coeliac disease, will be no more. Revelation 21:4 promises, “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain.” Until then, we honor God with our lives, trusting that He walks with us in every condition.
Encouragement for Today
If you or someone you love has coeliac disease, know that God sees you and cares for you. Psalm 147:3 says, “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” He is with you in every meal you prepare, every label you read, and every prayer you offer. In Jesus, we have the ultimate healer who understands suffering and brings peace.
