A Biblical Overview of Healing
Healing has always been central to God’s plan for humanity. From the Old Testament to the New Testament, the Bible reveals God’s desire to restore, renew, and heal His people—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Through faith, obedience, and the power of Jesus Christ, healing remains a promise for those who believe.
Healing in the Old Testament
The Old Testament provides numerous accounts of divine healing. God established Himself as Jehovah-Rapha, “The Lord who heals you” (Exodus 15:26). After delivering the Israelites from Egypt, He promised them health and protection, saying, “If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in His eyes, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians” (Exodus 15:26). This verse demonstrates that divine healing is tied to obedience and faith in God’s word.
Throughout the Old Testament, God performed miraculous healings. In 2 Kings 5, Naaman, a commander in the Syrian army, was healed of leprosy after obeying Elisha’s instruction to wash in the Jordan River seven times. This act of faith exemplifies how healing often requires humility and trust in God’s methods, even when they seem unconventional.
Isaiah 53:5 prophesied the coming Messiah, saying, “By His wounds, we are healed.” This verse points to the ultimate healing—redemption through Jesus Christ—which would not only restore physical well-being but also spiritual salvation.
Healing in the Ministry of Jesus
Jesus’ earthly ministry was filled with acts of healing, demonstrating God’s compassionate nature. He healed the blind, the lame, the leprous, and even raised the dead. Matthew 19:2 says, “Great multitudes followed Him, and He healed them there.” Healing was a sign of God’s kingdom manifesting on earth.
One of the most profound healing accounts is found in Mark 5:25-34, where a woman who had suffered from a bleeding disorder for twelve years touched Jesus’ garment and was instantly healed. Jesus told her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.” This illustrates that healing is available through faith and persistence.
Jesus also demonstrated His authority over sickness in Matthew 8:16-17: “He drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: ‘He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases.'” This verse confirms that Jesus’ healing ministry was the fulfillment of God’s promise.
Healing Through Faith and the Church
The New Testament continues the theme of healing through the early Church. In Acts 3, Peter and John encountered a crippled man at the temple gate. Peter declared, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” The man was instantly healed, showcasing the power of Jesus’ name.
James 5:14-15 instructs believers on how to seek healing: “Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up.” This passage emphasizes the role of communal prayer and faith in healing.
Paul also spoke about divine healing. In 2 Corinthians 12:9, after seeking relief from a “thorn in the flesh,” he received God’s response: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” This teaches that while God can heal instantly, He also uses trials for spiritual growth.
Healing and Modern Faith
The concept of healing extends beyond biblical times. Many believers today testify of God’s healing power. Physical ailments, such as angina, can be viewed as spiritual metaphors. Just as angina restricts blood flow to the heart due to blockages, sin and doubt can hinder spiritual vitality. Just as physicians treat angina with medication or surgery, God provides healing through faith, prayer, and sometimes medical intervention. Psalm 41:3 declares, “The Lord sustains them on their sickbed and restores them from their bed of illness.”
Faith remains a crucial factor in receiving healing. Hebrews 11:1 states, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Just as the Israelites had to trust God for their protection, believers must trust Him for healing today.
The Ultimate Healing: Eternal Life
While physical healing is important, the greatest healing comes through salvation in Jesus Christ. John 3:16 declares, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Healing from sin and death is the ultimate restoration God offers.
Revelation 21:4 gives believers hope: “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” This verse reassures us that in eternity, healing will be complete and permanent.

The Bible provides a comprehensive view of healing—from the Old Testament promises to the healing ministry of Jesus and the continuation of healing through the Church. Physical healing, like that from diseases such as angina, serves as a reminder of our dependence on God. Spiritual healing, however, remains the greatest gift, bringing eternal life and restoration.

Whether one seeks physical restoration or spiritual renewal, the message of healing is one of hope, grace, and divine love.
