Healing is a central theme in the Bible
Whether physical, emotional, or spiritual, healing requires faith, patience, and sometimes active participation in the recovery process. This study explores healing through both biblical principles and practical wisdom, using the example of Achilles tendinopathy—a condition that requires intentional effort and perseverance to heal.
Healing in Scripture often involves a combination of divine intervention and human action. Jesus healed many by His word and touch, but He also encouraged faith and obedience. Just as Achilles tendinopathy does not improve with mere rest but requires movement and adaptation, spiritual and physical healing often demand active participation.
Key Verse: “He said to her, ‘Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.'” (Mark 5:34)
In this passage, Jesus acknowledges that healing is not just about the divine act but also about the person’s faith and action. The woman with the issue of blood actively sought Jesus, touching His garment in faith. Similarly, healing from physical ailments, like Achilles tendinopathy, involves seeking help, making adjustments, and trusting the process.
Faith without works is dead (James 2:26). While we trust in God for healing, we also take practical steps to aid recovery.
- Movement and Modification – Achilles tendinopathy does not improve with complete rest. Instead, modifying activities—taking breaks, reducing strain, and adjusting movements—promotes healing. Likewise, spiritual healing often requires changes in habits, environments, and thought patterns.Biblical Example: “Stand up, take your mat, and walk.” (John 5:8)Jesus told the paralyzed man to take action. His healing required movement. Similarly, those recovering from injuries or emotional wounds must take active steps toward restoration.
- Endurance and Patience – Healing is a process. Achilles tendinopathy can cause pain and stiffness, but continued movement within limitations helps recovery. In the same way, spiritual healing may involve challenges that require endurance and trust.Key Verse: “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” (Isaiah 40:31)Waiting on the Lord does not mean inactivity; it means trusting in Him while taking necessary steps toward healing.
- Obedience to Wisdom – The Bible encourages seeking wisdom. Healing often comes through practical measures—medical treatment, therapy, or lifestyle changes. Ignoring wise counsel can hinder recovery.Key Verse: “A wise man listens to advice.” (Proverbs 12:15)Just as Achilles tendinopathy requires modified activities instead of complete rest, spiritual healing may involve adjusting one’s approach rather than stopping altogether.
Jesus as the Healer
Jesus healed many afflictions, demonstrating that nothing is beyond God’s power. However, healing often required participation from those in need.
- The Blind Man (John 9:6-7) – Jesus healed him but told him to wash in the pool of Siloam.
- The Leper (Luke 17:12-14) – Jesus sent him to the priests, requiring an act of obedience.
- The Lame Man (Luke 5:17-26) – His friends took action, lowering him through the roof.
Each case involved faith, action, and divine intervention. Healing requires a balance of trust and effort.
Practical Application: Applying Biblical Healing Principles to Daily Life
- Trust God’s Plan – Healing may not be immediate, but God works through the process.
- Take Action – Modify your habits, seek wise counsel, and follow necessary treatments.
- Stay Faithful in Prayer – Pray for strength, wisdom, and endurance.
- Encourage Others – Support those going through physical or emotional struggles.
Final Thought: Healing, whether from Achilles tendinopathy or any affliction, requires faith, wisdom, and perseverance. Just as we must keep moving despite pain, we must also press forward spiritually, trusting in God’s perfect timing and plan.
