Obesity and Healing Prayer: Restoring the Image of God in Your Body

The challenge of obesity is often viewed through the narrow lens of natural laws, calorie counting, and physical exertion. While these intermediary agencies have their place, there is a tendency to attach more importance to the remedy than to the direct action of God. When we become so occupied with the visible struggle, we can inadvertently intercept the presence of our God and turn away from the very Source of our life.

You were created in the image of God. Have you ever considered why you have the shape you have? Why two hands, two eyes, and a single heart? It is because you are patterned after God Himself. You are made in His likeness and His image. Because you are His masterpiece, your body is not meant to be a place of bondage or a “bitter pill” of toxicity and weight; it is meant to be a temple of liberty.

The Sweetness for the Bitter Water

In the wilderness, the Israelites encountered a waterhole that was bitter and undrinkable. Their natural instinct was to complain and look for a new source. But the Lord showed Moses a tree, and when that tree was cast into the water, the bitterness was made sweet.

Obesity and its related symptoms—the heaviness in the limbs, the strain on the heart, the shortness of breath, and the metabolic toxicity—can feel like a bitter malignancy that cannot be fixed. But the God we serve specializes in making the bitter sweet. Just as the tree changed the water, the “tree” of the Cross has already provided the restorative power to make your physical being clean, normal, and healthy.

Scripture 1: Isaiah 53:4

“Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.”

From Strength to Strength

When the physical senses report weakness or a lack of self-control, the natural man wants to retreat. However, the spiritual man must feed on the Word to gain the upper hand. You must feed your spirit even more than you realize. Hearing the truth of God’s provision has a “pounding effect” on your inner man, pushing out unbelief and fear.

Even when you feel weaker than you have ever felt, your confession must remain steadfast. You must say: “I am going from strength to strength. I am increasing with strength. I am moving from level to level of restoration.” This is not a theory; it is spiritual exercise. Just as you nourish your body, you must nourish your spirit with the revelation that you are washed, sanctified, and justified in the name of the Lord Jesus. You are not a “sinner” struggling with a “vice”; you are a redeemed child of God walking out your freedom.

The Lesson of Naaman’s Pride

We often see people fail to receive because of false preconceptions. Consider Naaman, a noble man who suffered from leprosy. When told to wash in the Jordan River, his pride was insulted. He thought there were better, more “logical” ways to be healed. It was only when he humbled himself and obeyed the simple Word of the Lord that his flesh was restored like that of a little child.

In the journey of overcoming obesity, pride or “ordinary means” might tell you that the Word is not enough. But the commands of God are not mere theories; they are the authority in Heaven and on earth. When you humble yourself to believe that “all things are possible to him that believes,” you tap into a power that transcends the laws of nature.

Scripture 2: Acts 10:38

“How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.”

Sickness is Oppression, Not a Teacher

The Spirit, speaking through the Book of Acts, makes it clear: Jesus went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil. God does not use physical ailments or bodily struggles to teach you lessons. Sickness and disease, including the metabolic disorders associated with obesity, are recognized by the Spirit as satanic oppression.

God is not the author of the weight that slows you down; He is the author of the “wings” that help you rise. Malachi speaks of the Sun of Righteousness arising with healing in His beams. This healing is an inclusive promise. If the darker dispensations of the Old Testament offered mercy and compassion to sufferers, how much more does the glorious Gospel dispensation—built on a better covenant—offer you today?

The Year of Jubilee

In the Old Testament, the Year of Jubilee was the time when every lost possession was restored. If you had lost your land or your freedom, you got it back. Imagine the joy of laying down your shovel and heading home because the “Jubilee” had been declared.

You have a Jubilee for your body. If you have lost your health, your shape, or your vitality to the enemy’s oppression, today is the day to take back your “farm.” You are redeemed from the curse. You are washed. You are cleansed. You do not have to wait until you see the physical change to believe you are saved and restored; you believe it first, and then the manifestation follows.

Scripture 3: Matthew 8:17

“That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.”

Refreshing the Soul and Body

The Literal Translation of the Psalms tells us, “My soul He refresheth.” This refreshment is not just for the “inner man,” though it begins there. As your spirit is fed and your soul is refreshed by the Word, it begins to affect your mortal flesh. The symptoms of life remain in a tree for a time even after it is cut down, but eventually, the old “death” must wither away because the source has been severed.

Continue to feed on these truths as if you have never heard them before. Let the Word of God be your shepherd. A real shepherd feeds the flock, and as you are fed on this revelation, you will find that you no longer desire the things that lead to bondage. You are a new creation. You are going from strength to strength, and the Lord is confirming His Word in your body with signs following.
