God’s Will to Heal and Restore
Throughout Scripture, we see the heart of God revealed as a healing and redeeming God. From the garden of Eden to the heavenly city described in Revelation, God’s desire is wholeness — spiritually, emotionally, and physically. When mankind fell through sin, brokenness entered the world: not only spiritual separation from God, but physical sickness, disease, and disorder.
One of the many forms of physical affliction we see today is disease that comes through disobedience to God’s ways, including sexually transmitted infections. Among these is chlamydia, a bacterial infection and one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the UK. According to the NHS, chlamydia often shows no symptoms but can cause serious complications if left untreated — including infertility.
In light of this, how does the Bible speak about healing? How should followers of Jesus respond when faced with sickness, or when knowledge of a diagnosis such as chlamydia enters our lives or our community?
1. The Nature of Sickness in a Fallen World
Genesis 3 recounts the fall of mankind — sin entered, and with it, the curse of pain, sickness, and death. Romans 5:12 affirms: “Through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned.”
While not every illness is a direct result of personal sin, the existence of sickness in the world is a result of the brokenness caused by the fall. Sometimes, however, sin can create direct physical consequences. In 1 Corinthians 6:18–20, Paul warns believers to flee sexual immorality, noting that “every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.”
Infections like chlamydia, which are spread through unprotected sexual activity, are one such consequence — not merely a public health concern, but a spiritual and moral one. That does not mean God brings sickness to punish, but it does mean that our actions can expose us to harm. Still, God’s heart is restoration.
2. The Compassionate Healer
In the Gospels, Jesus went about healing all who were oppressed (Acts 10:38). He did not recoil from the leper. He did not shame the woman with the issue of blood. He forgave sins and healed bodies.
When the paralytic was lowered through the roof in Mark 2, Jesus first said, “Your sins are forgiven,” and then said, “Get up, take your mat, and walk.” This dual work shows us something profound: Jesus came to make people whole, inside and out.
No matter how a disease came upon a person — whether by personal sin, generational affliction, or exposure in a fallen world — Jesus approached with healing, never with condemnation. The same is true today.
3. Wisdom and Medical Stewardship
The Lord calls His people not only to believe for healing but also to walk in wisdom. Proverbs 4:7 says, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom.” This includes seeking help when needed and caring for our bodies.
The Bible speaks of natural remedies, such as Isaiah 38:21: “Now Isaiah had said, ‘Let them take a lump of figs, and apply it as a poultice on the boil, and he shall recover.’” God created natural means and gave knowledge to physicians. Jesus Himself said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick” (Luke 5:31).
When dealing with infections like chlamydia, it is wise to be tested, treated, and informed. According to the NHS website, chlamydia can be easily treated with antibiotics. Early detection prevents complications like infertility and pelvic inflammatory disease.
There is no shame in seeking help. God often uses medicine and professionals as part of His healing plan.
4. Repentance and Closing the Door
While sickness may come for many reasons, the Bible encourages self-examination. In Psalm 139:23–24, David prays, “Search me, O God, and know my heart… see if there is any offensive way in me.”
If sickness is a result of sinful choices — such as sexual immorality — then repentance is key. Not only does repentance restore fellowship with God, it often closes the spiritual “door” that was opened. Ephesians 4:27 says, “Do not give the devil a foothold.”
Deliverance and healing often go hand-in-hand with renunciation of sin. Confession is not just a moral act — it is a spiritual weapon. James 5:16 declares: “Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.”
5. Faith for Healing and Authority in Christ
Jesus gave His followers power over sickness and disease. Mark 16:17–18 promises that those who believe “will lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” Faith is key. Matthew 9:29 records Jesus saying, “According to your faith let it be to you.”
This includes believing for healing from physical infections. God can heal in an instant. He also heals progressively. Whether healing comes through a miraculous moment or through antibiotics and rest, all healing ultimately comes from God.
In Luke 10:19, Jesus says, “I have given you authority… over all the power of the enemy.” That includes the spiritual forces behind shame, sickness, and disease. Believers can pray with boldness and act with faith.
6. Healing the Whole Person — Spirit, Soul, and Body
God doesn’t just heal the physical body. He heals the heart. Those who have experienced STIs like chlamydia may carry not only a physical burden, but also guilt, fear, and shame. But God restores the whole person.
Psalm 147:3 declares, “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Jesus bore our griefs and carried our sorrows (Isaiah 53:4). No matter what led to the sickness, the cross is big enough to cover it.
Your story does not end with a diagnosis. Jesus is still the Redeemer.
Conclusion: Walk in Light, Walk in Healing
We are invited to walk in the light — both spiritually and practically. Let us flee sin, pursue purity, and stand in faith for divine healing. Let us seek wise medical counsel when needed, and trust God to work through both the miraculous and the practical.
