The Battle of the Mind
When Israel was in the wilderness, they sinned against God and fiery serpents came among them. The Lord told Moses to lift up a bronze serpent on a pole, and whoever looked upon it lived (Numbers 21:8–9). Jesus Himself said, “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up” (John 3:14). What was happening? A type of Christ was being revealed. Just as the people looked and lived, so now all who look to Jesus and His cross are healed and restored.
This truth is not only for physical sickness, but also for the mind. Depression is a deep weariness of the soul. It clouds vision, drains energy, and whispers lies about hopelessness. Yet here is the Gospel: “It pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He hath put Him to grief [sickness]” (Isaiah 53:10). That Hebrew word carries the meaning of “sickness,” including emotional affliction. Jesus bore not only cancer and fevers, but also despair, torment, and depression. If He carried it, you do not have to.
The enemy often says, “If you had stronger faith, you wouldn’t feel this way.” Or, “You failed God, so now you’re stuck.” These are lies. Jesus bore your failures too. Mercy covers your weakness. “By His stripes you were healed” (1 Peter 2:24). Not just your body—your heart, your mind, your emotions. Healing is not a theory, it is the inheritance of every believer.
Consider Lazarus. When Jesus arrived, Martha said, “Lord, by this time he stinketh” (John 11:39). That was unbelief speaking. Yet Jesus pressed forward. He lifted His eyes and thanked the Father even before the miracle. He then spoke life into death itself: “Lazarus, come forth!” (v.43). Depression may feel like a tomb, dark and heavy, but Jesus calls into that tomb with His voice of truth. He speaks your name: “Come forth!” And the graveclothes of despair must fall away.
Beloved, you may not “feel” healed yet. You may not “see” breakthrough today. But faith believes before it sees. The cross is already lifted up. Healing is already accomplished. Depression is not your identity—Christ is. Lift your eyes to Him as Israel lifted theirs to the bronze serpent, and receive His life.
Reflection Question: Where in your life do you need to hear Jesus call you out of the tomb of depression today?
Fighting the Good Fight of Faith Against Depression
Paul told Timothy, “Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life” (1 Timothy 6:12). Depression often feels like a battle you cannot win, but Scripture declares it is a fight already won by Jesus. Your role is not to create victory, but to lay hold of what has already been given.
How do you fight depression by faith? Begin with gratitude. At Lazarus’ grave, before the miracle, Jesus prayed, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me” (John 11:41). Gratitude shifts your gaze from darkness to light. Depression says, “There is nothing good.” Faith says, “I will thank Him for what He has already done.” Thank Him for the cross. Thank Him for His presence. Thank Him that He never leaves you. Thanksgiving opens the door to healing light.
Next, stand on the Word. “He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses” (Matthew 8:17). Depression is included in this promise. The devil may point to lingering symptoms and whisper, “See? Nothing has changed.” But faith responds, “It is written… By His stripes I was healed.” Symptoms are not the truth—God’s Word is truth.
Depression often isolates, but healing flows in fellowship. When Lazarus came out of the tomb, he was still bound hand and foot. Jesus commanded others, “Loose him, and let him go” (John 11:44). Likewise, you need people around you who will help unwrap the graveclothes of depression—family, friends, church community. Don’t walk this journey alone. God’s healing often comes through the hands and prayers of others.
And finally, expect the miraculous. The Pharisees feared Jesus because “this Man certainly does miracles” (John 11:47). Those miracles were signs authenticating that He was the Christ. Depression tells you, “This is permanent.” The Gospel declares, “Jesus does miracles still.” The same Spirit who raised Christ from the dead dwells in you (Romans 8:11). That Spirit quickens your mortal body—and your weary soul.
Friend, the age of miracles is not past. Depression is not stronger than the cross. This battle is not forever. As you fight the good fight of faith—laying hold of the promises, thanking God in the dark, standing on His Word, and walking with others—you will see the day when joy returns, peace floods, and hope rises again.
Reflection Question: What Scripture can you begin to declare daily as a weapon against depression’s lies?
