Heavenly Citizenship and the Authority to Heal
Hello friends, and welcome to our Bible study. Today, we’re going to dive deep into a topic that’s close to God’s heart: divine healing. We’ll explore how our relationship with God gives us a right to health and wholeness, and we’ll apply these powerful truths to a specific physical challenge—concussion symptoms.
Let’s begin by understanding who we are in Christ. The Bible tells us in Philippians 3 that our citizenship is in heaven. The Greek word, pŏlitӗuma, is much more than a simple formality. It means we belong to a heavenly nation, and as citizens of that nation, we have rights and privileges that a foreigner doesn’t have. Our name is written in the Lamb’s Book of Life, and this is the only roster that truly matters. I don’t care about your family tree or your political clout; the moment you become a citizen of heaven, you have rights, and you have them right now!
This heavenly citizenship gives us a legal and spiritual standing to receive from God. And just as Jesus had authority on earth, we do too, because we are His body. The Bible shows us that Jesus’ ministry wasn’t a random series of miracles; it was a perfect reflection of the Father’s will. In John 5:19-21, Jesus said, “the Son can do nothing by Himself; He can do only what He sees His Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.” This is a foundational truth for us. If the Father’s will is to raise the dead and give them life, then His will is also to bring wholeness and healing. Sickness and death are not from the Father; they are part of the enemy’s work. Jesus’ life and ministry were a perfect example of God’s desire for wholeness, and we are called to continue that work.
Think about a person suffering from a concussion. They might experience confusion, a blank expression, or even inappropriate emotional responses. They may have a hard time remembering things or even lose consciousness. Their physical symptoms can include headaches, dizziness, nausea, and blurry vision—all signs of a system that is out of whack. From a medical perspective, these symptoms are a sign of injury, but in the spiritual realm, we know they are part of the curse that Jesus came to redeem us from. He is the “Mighty One of Jacob,” our “Shepherd” and “the Rock of Israel” (Genesis 49:24). As our Shepherd, He leads us to safety and wholeness. It is not His will for His sheep to be confused, dazed, or in pain.
Now, let’s address a common misconception. Some believe that sickness is always a discipline for sin. The truth is, while sin can have negative consequences, not every sickness is a direct result of personal sin. The story of Job reveals that sickness can be a spiritual battle, a trial orchestrated by the enemy. Our first response should be to search our hearts and make sure we are in right standing with God, but we should never assume that an illness is a punishment. Once we have discerned our hearts and submitted to God, we can stand on His promise of healing. We are to be on God’s side, renouncing what is sin in His sight, and then believe that we are accepted and have a right to His promises.
This is where our authority comes in. The Greek word for authority, exousia, refers to our right to act and to exercise our will based on our position. We have authority over sickness because Jesus gave it to us. Just as He has the power to destroy the works of the devil, we, as His body, have the authority to command sickness to leave our bodies. This is not about our own efforts or strength; it’s about exercising the rights we were given through Christ.
So, for someone dealing with a concussion, you don’t have to just accept the symptoms. Your heavenly citizenship gives you the right to health. You have the authority to speak to your brain, your nervous system, and your senses. You can declare, “I am a citizen of heaven, and my body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. Confusion and dizziness have no place in me. My mind is the mind of Christ, and my senses are restored in His name!”
In the next chapter, we’ll talk about the role of faith and the Word in activating this authority. But for now, just remember this: You are not a victim; you are a victor. You have rights, and you have them now. Don’t settle for less!
The Power of Faith and the Word of God for Healing
Welcome back! In our last session, we laid the groundwork for our healing journey by establishing our identity as citizens of heaven. Now, let’s get practical and explore how we activate those rights. It all boils down to two key ingredients: faith and God’s Word.
Hebrews 11 is a master class on faith. It’s not just a feeling; it’s the “substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” The heroes of faith—people like Noah and Abraham—didn’t wait until they saw the results to believe. Noah built an ark on dry land because God’s Word was a settled fact in his mind. Abraham believed for a son when all the physical evidence was to the contrary. . This is exactly how we must approach healing. Our state of mind should be one of settled confidence. We believe we have received our healing at the moment we pray, even if the symptoms of a concussion—like a headache or blurry vision—are still present. We stand on the Word of God as our sole reason for this settled conviction.
This kind of faith is essential because unbelief can hinder God’s power. Remember the story in Mark 6 where Jesus went to His hometown? The people were astonished by His wisdom and mighty works, but they were so offended by His humble beginnings that they chose to disbelieve. The Bible says He “could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.” Their unbelief limited what He could do! The same is true for us. If we are constantly wondering if God will heal us or if we say things like, “God is so high above us, we just can’t understand His ways,” we are giving a foothold to doubt. We have to believe that the promises of God are for us, and that our God desires our health and wellness.
So, how do we build this kind of unwavering faith? It comes from the Word of God. The Bible says that when God’s Word becomes “health to all your flesh,” your sickness will be gone. We have seen the Word, when received and acted on, produce these results thousands of times! Just like a healthy diet and exercise strengthen our physical body, the Word of God strengthens our spirit and brings healing to our physical body. It’s the divine method for receiving the blessings God has provided.
Let’s apply this directly to concussion symptoms. When you’re struggling with a headache, dizziness, or confusion, what are you confessing? Are you talking about how bad you feel, or are you speaking God’s Word over your body? This isn’t about denying the symptoms; it’s about putting your faith in a higher authority. You can say:
- “The Lord will take away from you all sickness, and will put none of the evil diseases of Egypt upon you” (Deuteronomy 7:15).
- “By His stripes I am healed” (Isaiah 53:5).
- “He sent his word, and healed them” (Psalm 107:20).
These aren’t just ancient verses; they are living, active words that have the power to change your circumstances. Your confession—what you say out loud—is a critical part of the process. It’s not just a religious exercise; it’s a way of aligning your words with God’s Word. When you consistently speak God’s promises, you are holding fast to your confession of those rights, which is how you get from the invisible realm of faith to the visible realm of manifestation.
For a person with a concussion, the symptoms are a direct attack on their mind and body. The enemy wants to bring confusion and pain. But we can respond with authority and faith. The Bible says, “Your body is a member of Me” (1 Corinthians 6:15). Your brain, your sight, and your nervous system belong to Jesus. You have the right to declare that your mind is made whole and clear, your vision is perfect, and your balance is restored, because God’s Word is true.
Healing is a core part of the Gospel. It’s not just for a select few. Jesus came to bring us a “whole message for a whole people.” We are to believe and say the same things God says about our lives. It’s time to stop settling for less and start living as the heirs we are. It’s time to find that part of God’s Word that speaks healing to your situation, and attend to it until it becomes a living reality in your body. It all comes from Him, and it all comes by and through Jesus.
