Healing has always been a central theme in the Bible, demonstrating God’s power and compassion for His people. From Old Testament miracles to New Testament healings performed by Jesus and His disciples, scripture provides a strong foundation for the belief that God desires His people to be whole—physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Divine Healing in Scripture
One of the most well-known healing accounts in the Bible is found in Acts 3. Peter and John encounter a man who had been lame from birth, begging at the temple gate. Peter, filled with faith, declares, “Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk!” (Acts 3:6). Instantly, the man is healed, showing that faith in Christ can bring miraculous restoration.
Jesus’ ministry was marked by healing. He healed the blind, restored the lame, cleansed lepers, and even raised the dead. In Matthew 8:16-17, it is written, “He cast out the spirits with His word and healed all who were sick, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: ‘He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses.’”
Faith plays a crucial role in healing. Jesus often told those He healed, “Your faith has made you well” (Mark 5:34). This underscores that belief in God’s power is essential for experiencing divine healing. However, healing is not just about faith; God also provides wisdom and medical knowledge to aid in recovery.
Understanding Sickness: Chickenpox and Healing
Chickenpox (varicella) is a common childhood illness caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It spreads easily through direct contact or airborne particles from an infected person. Children under 10 are most susceptible, particularly in the winter and spring months between March and May.
The Bible does not mention chickenpox specifically, but it does reference diseases and plagues. In Exodus 15:26, God tells His people, “If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you.”
While miraculous healings still occur, God has also provided humanity with medical advancements. Balancing Faith and Medicine
The Bible encourages both faith and the use of medicine. Luke, the author of the Gospel of Luke and the book of Acts, was a physician, demonstrating that medicine and faith can coexist. In 1 Timothy 5:23, Paul advises Timothy to use a little wine for his stomach, showing that practical remedies were recognized.
Healing can come in various forms—through prayer, medical treatment, or a combination of both. Regardless of the method, believers are encouraged to trust in God’s timing and will. James 5:14-15 instructs, “Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up.”
Conclusion: God’s Power to Heal
Healing is an essential part of God’s nature. Whether through divine intervention, medical treatment, or a natural recovery process, God is at work in restoring health. The Bible teaches that sickness is not part of God’s original plan, but through faith and wisdom, believers can seek healing. As Psalm 103:2-3 states, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases.”
